Established in 1850 is the earliest form of government. There are 1,432 Townships in Illinois. Townships are considered a local unit of government but are uniquely different from other local units of government such as villages which are considered municipalities. Currently, townships operate within 20 states of the nation. Townships emphasize primarily on the human service needs of the community as well as the road and bridges in the unincorporated areas of the township. The elected officials that make up township government include a Supervisor, Clerk, Assessor, Highway Commissioner, and Trustees (4).
