The General Assistance Office provides both emergency and ongoing financial assistance to qualified residents of Schaumburg Township. A variety of other services are also available including:



Mission Statement

The mission of the General Assistance Office is to provide financial support and direction to disadvantaged residents of Schaumburg Township by improving their quality of life, addressing their critical needs, and helping them to achieve self-sufficiency.

General Assistance Office

The General Assistance Office provides both emergency and ongoing financial assistance to qualified residents of Schaumburg Township. A variety of other services are also available including:

  • Information and referral for Public Aid and Social Security.
  • Food Pantry.
  • Access to Care.
  • Energy Assistance (LIHEAP).
  • Job Board.
  • Referral to other social services agencies.
  • Information and referral for the homeless.
  • Coordination and distribution of community donations and food baskets.

General Assistance (GA)

Schaumburg Township provides General Assistance to those in need who are not eligible for other State (TANF) or Federal (SSI) assistance, and do not have the financial resources to provide for their own needs. However, an applicant who is no longer eligible for benefits due to non-cooperation, suspension, receipt of a lump-sum payment, or expiration of lifetime limits under the Illinois TANF program, is not eligible for General Assistance.

Assistance is provided according to adopted written standards and is applied consistently to all those who apply.

Applicants must meet the income and asset guidelines as established in the written standards adopted by the General Assistance Office. Applicants must be residents of the State of Illinois and the Township of Schaumburg, be age 18 or older, and either a United States citizen or an alien who meets legal requirements.

Each applicant will be asked to complete and sign an application for assistance and provide necessary documentation before assistance can be issued.

Emergency Assistance (EA)

Emergency Assistance is available to residents of Schaumburg Township who meet income and asset guidelines as established by the General Assistance Office. Assistance can only be issued once in a eighteen month cycle, and must meet the definition of an "emergency" or "life-threatening" situation. (ie., evictions, utility disconnections, need for prescriptions).

How do you apply for GA/EA?

To apply, call or stop by to request a GA/EA application and documentation list. A signed application and required documentation must be submitted before any assistance can be considered. Assistance is issued by appointment.

Agencies Funded By Schaumburg Township

In addition to the services already listed which are provided directly by the Township, Schaumburg Township also funds a variety of non-profit human care agencies. These agencies provide specialized services for specialneed groups such as:

  • Homeless and Low Income.
  • Families.
  • Senior Citizens and Disabled.
  • Mentally Ill and Developmentally Disabled Citizens.
  • Abused Children.
  • Runaways.
  • Battered Women.
  • Drug and Alcohol Abusers.

The Township building also houses the Department of Human Services Public Aid Office (847) 843-1400 and The Salvation Army Community Counseling Center (847) 885-4060.
