Carnival Rides

At Schaumburg's Septemberfest

Saturday, September 1, 2001

Hosted by the Village of Schaumburg &
coordinated by Schaumburg Township Disabled Services

  • Free rides for Disabled Kids, their families & Disabled adults who live in Schaumburg Township.
  • The rides will NOT be open to the public, so reservations are required.
  • Volunteers will be there to assist children.

Who are the IDHHC Members?

The Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission (IDHHC) is composed of eleven members appointed by the Governor. They are appointed based on their position, knowledge, and experience that enable them to reasonably represent the concerns, needs and recommendations of deaf or hard of hearing persons. By Statute, a majority of the members must be deaf or hard of hearing. The current members are:

  • Terms expiring November 2001 Thomas Benziger, Laura Blackburn and John Miller
  • Terms expiring November 2002 Marion Dramin, Loretta McKenzie, Harmon Menkis and Jill Sahakian
  • Terms expiring November 2003 Amy Blough, Mary Clark, Ralph Sesko, Jr. and Darrell Washington

Jerry Covell is the Director of the IDHHC and is responsible for enacting and coordinating projects as directed by the Commission. Michael Cowles, Philip Fiorini, Patty Greene, Cory Parker, Pamela Oller, Janet Lambert and Carolyn Benton are the staff members at the IDHHC office in Springfield. Attorney General Office

The Attorney General Office has a TTY number: 312-814-3374. Anyone can call for any issues or complaints. The calls do not have to be related to disability rights. SSA Announcement

The Social Security Administration (SSA), located at 230 West Lake Street, Bloomingdale, will be installing a new computer system from Friday, August 14th through Friday, August 21st. All employees will be in training during that time. The SSA asks that the customers, who do not need urgent assistance, wait till the week of August 24 to conduct their business. Normal service will resume Monday, August 24th. The toll-free numbers, 1-800-772-1213 V & 1-800-325-0778 TTY, are always available to assist customers.

Deaf Beach Day

West Suburban Association of the Deaf (WSAD) is hosting Deaf Beach Day every Sunday, 12 to 8 p.m., at Naperville Centennial Beach, 320 W. Jackson Avenue, Naperville. New Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children Playgroup

There is a new playgroup for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and their siblings in the Joliet area. It is every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Meet first at Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living, 2415-A W. Jefferson Street in Joliet, and then go to different location for activities. Midwest Timberfest 2001

The 3rd Midwest Timberfest of the Deaf will be held August 31st - September 2nd, at Crockett's Resort Camping, Wisconsin Dells, Wisc. There will be all kinds of activities, such as ax, log & keg throwing, darts, chainsaw, tug-o-war, water log rolling, wood carving, horseshoes, speed cut ax, timber relay, split log, and much more. Gestunos Sign Language Interpreting Workshop

Northern Illinois University (NIU) & the College of Education are hosting Gestunos Sign Language Interpreting Workshop, given by Steve Walker of Interpreter Education at Gallaudet University. It will be on August 18 & 19, 2001, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., at the Chicago Club of the Deaf, 4221 W. Irving Park Road, Chicago. It will be of interest to all skilled ASL interpreters and educators in professional settings. The cost is $50 + $10 (registration fee). There will be a new evening Diabetes Support Group, starting on August 28th. Abilities Expo

Abilities Expo is one show dedicated to educating and improving the lives of people with disabilities. Learn about new products and services from computers to athletic equipment and mobility products to daily living aids. All will be displayed for you to see, test and compare. All About Kidcare Program

KidCare is a program, offered by the state of Illinois, which helps children and pregnant women who cannot pay for health insurance. It can even help people who work but have trouble paying for health insurance. This program is for children up to age 18. They must be US citizens or legal immigrants and must live in Illinois. Refugees and those who came to US seeking asylum are allowed. Pregnant women with little income can also join this program.

KidCare covers many medical services: care by doctors, dentists, eye and foot doctors, nurses & mental health care staff; care at hospitals & clinics; shots; check-ups and prevention; blood tests & x-rays; medicine/pills; drug and alcohol abuse services; care for pregnant women; some medical transportation; etc. For more information, contact the state of Illinois at 877-204-1012 TTY; 866-4-OUR-KIDS Voice; www.kidcareillinois.com (Website). New Bowlers Needed

  • Hi-Society Mixed Bowling League is looking for bowlers. It has existed for 25 years. This league will be held at Arlington Heights Lanes, near route 53, in Arlington Heights. Annual Women's Luncheon

New Interpreting Agency

Lucas Interpreting, Inc., is a new sign language interpreting agency in the Chicagoland area, owned by an interpreter, Joe Lucas and his wife, Sara Lucas, who started the new agency in June, 2001. It offers sign language interpreting services in a wide variety of settings as well as skilled interpreters who understand the deaf needs. A permanent office will be set up later. Interpreter Law Town Hall Meetings

Currently, the Illinois Deaf & Hard of Hearing Commission is drafting interpreter certification and Licensure laws. Establishing guidelines & standards for interpreters, protecting consumers and regulating the interpreting profession in Illinois are important. In the next few months, they are hosting many town hall meetings, so that people can share their concerns and feedback regarding this draft. Choices For Parents

CHOICES for Parents is a coalition of Chicagoland agencies, promoting the development of children with newly identified hearing loss by providing their parents with immediate access to support, information, and resources to meet their families' needs. The coalition members include Alternatives in Education for the Hearing Impaired, Catholic Office of the Deaf, Chicago Hearing Society, Children's Memorial Hospital, HITEC, and MENDAC Institute on Early Childhood. By the end of 2002, all hospitals must screen the hearing of newborns before they go home. Karen Aguilar is the new coordinator for CHOICES for Parents. New Program - EARN

The Employment Assistance Referral Network (EARN) is an exciting new nationwide program designed to link providers and employers, thereby increasing employment for people with disabilities. The program is funded through a grant under the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy. Schaumburg Township Disabled Services will be a provider of this service. How EARN works:

  • Employers contact the EARN Hotline or website.
  • The EARN staff obtains job information.
  • The EARN staff contacts its providers to identify qualified candidates.
  • The EARN staff refers employers to providers with qualified candidates.
  • If you would like to be part of this program, send your resume to Schaumburg Township Disabled Services, One Illinois Blvd., Hoffman Estates, IL 60169. Resumes will be kept for one year.

Picnic By Illini Chapter

13th Annual Picnic by Illini Chapter of IAD will be held on Saturday, August 18th, at the Lake of the Woods Pavilion, Mahomet, IL, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be games, golfing, swimming, paddleboats, fishing, a playground, basketball, door prizes and much more. The admission fees including lunch and dinner are $6 (adult); $4 (senior citizens); $3 (children, ages 6 to 12). Sodas & lemonade will be for sale. September 21st and 22nd are the dates for the deaf class reunion weekend for Whitney Young High School students and alumni.
