States With 711 Relay Access

Twenty-five states currently have or are planning to implement 711 access. They are: Alabama (beginning July 1st, 2001), Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii (also has 511 for voice users), Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio (partially implemented), Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas (partially implemented), Vermont, Virginia, & West Virginia.

The FCC has mandated that 711 access be available nationwide by October 1, 2001. When relay users travel to other states, they will not have to search for different 800 numbers to use the relay. Also, it simplifies the process for hearing callers to place calls to Deaf & Hard of Hearing people.

Note:

  • 711 may not work with cellular phones, even if the states do offer 711 access.
  • Some office phone systems may require reprogramming in order to make 711 accessible on those systems.
  • The entire country of Canada has 711 in each of its providences.

    Hearing Aid Assistance

There are several sources for funding for hearing aids:

    • Illinois Public Aid - a single hearing aid can be dispensed without approval only if the person is on full public aid (no "spend-down"). Some people require a prior approval to get a hearing aid, which could take months, but if you qualify, it is free.
    • DHS-ORS - If a person is under-employed or at risk of becoming unemployed because of poor hearing at work. ORS cannot help everyone who needs a hearing aid, but they are worth a talking to if your hearing affects your employment.
    • Organizations - There are several organizations like Sertoma clubs and others, which can provide reconditioned hearing aids. They are usually at a reduced rate or free to the consumers.
    • Communities - Many communities have medical spending assistance program to help people who qualify for their funding.
    • Hearing Aid Dispensery - Often they sell hearing aids at a reduced price. For example, Chicago Hearing Society offers sales and services on a full fee or sliding fee basis.
