Intro to Community Art Project: Teens &
Seniors of Hoffman Estates
This year, the staff and teens of Spectrum Youth & Family Services and Vogelei
Teen Center planned our second Community Art Project. This experience
was amazing. We collaborated on ideas and decided to interview teens and senior
citizens around Hoffman Estates and compare their life views. We came up
with a total of twelve interview questions, and we asked each person a random
selection of three of these questions. We asked the teens questions in the
present
tense, and we asked the seniors in the past tense (about their life when
they were teens). Then we chose one of each person’s answers to include on
their photograph. We started with these questions:
- What do/did kids get in trouble for in school?
- What is/was your favorite meal?
- What do/did you collect?
- What is/was your favorite class in school & why?
- What technological advances do you think we’ll have in the next 20 years?
- What do/did you want to be when you grow/grew up?
(What did you end up being?)
- What was your first job?
- What are/were your hobbies?
- What is/was your favorite place to hang out?
- What is your most memorable experience as a teen?
- What advice would you give to teens today?
- What age do/did you most look forward to being & why?
Prepared with our questions, our journey
started with a trip to the bowling alley,
where we interviewed many individuals on the above topics. We continued
and accomplished our goal, which was to go to several local establishments to
get a large selection of opinions to compare with one another. We took
photographs
and collected information while we met many cool and unique people.
Our last step was to create interesting images using the Microsoft Picture It!
Program to edit each photo. All of the teens involved had fun and fascinating
ideas for transforming the images. The result is what you see here. The final
frame includes two of the original, untouched images as a comparison to the
modified images.
